A competitive effort from the Wellington Dukes came up a little short on Saturday night against the arch-rival Trenton Golden Hawks.

The Hawks won their first preseason game 6-3 at Lehigh Arena on the strength of a pair of goals from Spencer Hughes and three points each from Taeo Artichuk and Nate Taylor.

Head Coach Jacob Panetta sent out a gritty, hard-nosed lineup in his first OJHL game behind the bench after three seasons playing for the club (2013-16) and the team responded with a solid effort, despite the loss.

The Dukes overcame a two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead at one point in the second period on consecutive markers from Zack Carrier, Beckham Brooks and Maxime Morin before the Hawks jumped back in front to stay.

Carrier added an assist for a two-point game and Sacha Trudel added a pair of helpers.

Colby Booth-Housego (11 saves on 13 shots) and Royden Smith (16 saves on 20 shots) split the net.

The two teams will tangle again Sunday evening at 6:30 back at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens.
