Dukes sign Whitby defenceman

Fresh off a development camp this weekend, the Wellington Dukes have secured a veteran blueliner for the upcoming OJHL season.

20-year-old defenceman William Whelton was signed on Sunday evening by head coach Kent Lewis and GM Todd Diminie.

The Whitby, Ont. product spent the 2022-23 season with the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Caledonia Corvairs, where he posted nine points in 30 games.

He added another two points in 15 playoff games, leading the Corvairs to an appearance in the Golden Horseshoe Conference Final.

“I’m pumped to play for the Wellington Dukes under Coach Lewis. I can’t wait to get to work soon,” Whelton stated.

The development camp, held on Saturday at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre in Belleville, brought around 60 players to town to get their first on-ice reps in before the 2023 Main Training Camp in late August.

Many new members of the Dukes’ team staff was introduced during the event and were able to meet players and their parents as well.

New additions include; scouts Brent Heusinkveld, Allan Etmanski and Kent Danforth, the latter of which is also the equipment manager, strength and conditioning coach Adam Reynolds, trainer/sports physiotherapist Caitlin McCuaig, and goaltender coach Phil Groeneveld, among others.
