The Wellington Dukes tacked on another necessary two points to keep above water in a competitive OJHL East Conference.
The Dukes trumped the Aurora Tigers 4-2 in a rare Thursday afternoon affair at the Aurora Community Centre to start a busy four game in five-day weekend.
Wellington got off to a fast start with a pair of first period goals courtesy of Pana Efraimidis (14th of the year) from Cory Jewitt and Connor Hunt and Caleb MacDonald (5th of the season) from Ryan Schaap and Zander Latreille.
Will Mitchell upped the lead to 3-0 in the middle stanza after he took an outlet pass from Dimitri Tzaferis and converted on a partial breakaway
Logan Sitlani factored in as well on Mitchell’s 13th of the year that wound up being the game-winner.
Aurora got one back early in the third when Keegan Decaluwe banked a shot off a Wellington skate and in, but the Dukes essentially salted the game when Brad Barker connected with Zach Carrier on a two-on-one rush at the 13:14 mark.
Jace Lavallee cut the Wellington lead to two before the end of the game, but the Dukes still banked two points and increased their record to 31-16-0-3.
That sits them in a second-place tie with the St. Michael’s Buzzers, with a game in hand ahead of their final head-to-head match in the regular season Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Toronto.
