The Wellington Dukes point streak is over at 15 straight games.

The Cobourg Cougars did the damage on Monday night at the Cobourg Community Centre, defeating the Dukes 5-2.

The loss wasn’t without a strong offensive effort for Wellington, as the team threw 42 shots on net, but were foiled by Cougars goalie Ryan Piros.

The two teams traded powerplay goals late in the first period, with Sebastian Bulovs cashing in for Cobourg and David Campbell finding the net for the third time in two games for the Dukes.

Ryan Smith and Julien Jacob picked up the assists on Campbell’s 10th of the year.

Cougars veterans Tyler Hunt and Kallaway Mercer victimized Jacob Osborne for a pair in the second as Piros continued to baffle Dukes shooters.

Defenceman Jacob Dietz did pull the Dukes to within one only 1:48 into the third from Corbin Roach and Jared Langdon, but Wellington’s opportunities dried up after that.

Caleb Thompson added some insurance on the powerplay with just over a minute to play and George Krotiris sealed the win with an empty-netter.

The Dukes fall to 20-6-2-1 on the season as they get set to play another tough opponent, the number one ranked Toronto Jr. Canadiens at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
