| Community Involvement |
While the Wellington DUKES have always been involved in their community, 2010-2011 marked the first year of organized community involvement. Starting after Christmas, Community Involvement opportunities were coordinated by Jennifer Cobb who worked with community organizations, schools and service clubs to create successful community events involving the Wellington DUKES players.
Participating in a variety of events, the DUKES were more visible and involved in their community, and raised the profile of the team. The 35 Community Involvement events coordinated in 2010-2011 reached thousands of people in our community, generated excellent media coverage, and made the DUKES ‘heroes’ to hundreds of kids.
School based events were held at CML Snider School in Wellington, Queen Elizabeth School in Picton, and St. Gregory’s Catholic School in Picton. The close relationships that grew between the DUKES and the children of the community was evident in the massive ‘GO DUKES GO’ banner signed by every student at CML Snider School that hung at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in Huntsville, Ontario and by the screaming crowd that lined the halls of the school to welcome the DUKES home with their trophies following their Dudley Hewitt win.
In addition to schools, a number of events were in support of community based organizations and service clubs.
Looking ahead to the 2011-2012 season, the Community Involvement Coordinator wants to build upon the success of the first year continuing with elementary school events, and add more ‘community service’ to the mix. A letter of introduction has been drafted and will be sent out to County service clubs offering the involvement of the Wellington DUKES in their community events.
Respectfully submitted,
